5/19/2023 0 Comments Nobel prize in physicsSuch effects could allow the elements of a hidden-variable system to “conspire” together to produce measurement outcomes that mimic quantum mechanics. One of the most significant loopholes was based on the idea that the setting of Alice’s polarizer could have some influence on Bob’s polarizer or on the photons that are created at the source. The results of the first Bell test were a blow to hidden variables, but there were “loopholes” that hidden-variable supporters could claim to rescue their theory. The researchers collected 200 hours of data and found that the coincidence rates violated a revamped Bell’s inequality, proving that quantum mechanics is right. Each detector was equipped with a polarizer that could be rotated to an arbitrary orientation.įreedman and Clauser showed theoretically that quantum mechanics predictions diverge strongly from hidden variable predictions when Alice and Bob’s polarizers are offset from each other by 22.5° or 67.5°. The researchers installed two detectors (Alice and Bob) on opposite sides of the calcium source and measured the rate of coincidences-two photons hitting the detectors simultaneously. When a calcium atom de-excites, it can emit two photons whose polarizations are aligned. The Freedman-Clauser experiment used entangled photons obtained by exciting calcium atoms. The rate at which both photons went through these polarizers agreed with quantum mechanics predictions. The photons traveled to two separate polarizers, which were set at specific orientations relative to each other. The Freedman-Clauser experiment used entangled photons from excited calcium atoms. Johan Jarnestad/Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences Bell tested. Three years later, Clauser and Stuart Freedman (both at the University of California, Berkeley) succeeded in performing that experiment. A revised version using photons and polarizers was proposed in 1969 by Clauser, then at Columbia University, along with his colleagues. However, if quantum mechanics was correct, the inequality would be violated.īell’s work showed how to settle the debate between quantum and classical views, but his proposed experiment assumed detector capabilities that weren’t feasible. Bell showed that if hidden variables exist, the experimental results would obey a mathematical inequality. This time, however, the two researchers measure their respective particles in different ways and compare their results. As in Einstein’s paradox, Alice and Bob are each sent one particle of an entangled pair. That changed in 1964 when John Bell of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, proposed a thought experiment that could directly test the hidden variable hypothesis. The hidden variables were unmeasurable-by definition-so most physicists deemed their existence to be a philosophical issue, not an experimental one. To avoid such “spooky action at a distance,” Einstein proposed that lying underneath the quantum framework is a set of classical “hidden variables” that determine precisely how a particle will behave, rather than providing only probabilities. If Alice measures her particle, then she learns something about Bob’s particle-as if her measurement instantaneously changed the uncertainty about the state of his particle. He and his colleagues expressed their concern in a paradox they described in 1935 : Imagine creating two quantum mechanically entangled particles and distributing them between two separated researchers, characters later named Alice and Bob. But the theory assumes that some properties of a particle are inherently uncertain-a fact that bothered many physicists, including Albert Einstein. Since its inception, quantum mechanics has been wildly successful at predicting the outcomes of experiments. Zeilinger used some of those Bell-test techniques to demonstrate entanglement control methods that can be applied to quantum computing, quantum cryptography, and other quantum information technologies. Using entangled photons, Clauser and Aspect performed some of the first “Bell tests,” which confirmed quantum mechanics predictions while putting to bed certain alternative theories based on classical physics. The award is shared by Alain Aspect, John Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger, all of whom showed a mastery of entanglement-a quantum relationship between two particles that can exist over long distances. The Nobel Prize in Physics this year recognizes efforts to take quantum weirdness out of philosophy discussions and to place it on experimental display for all to see. ×ħ October 2022: We have replaced our initial one-paragraph announcement with a full-length Focus story. The 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics recognizes work on measuring and controlling quantum entanglement, shown here conceptually as a link between two quantum particles.

If the request is made electronically, the firm will provide the data in an accessible electronic format. The company can file for an extension of an extra two months if the “requests are complex or numerous,” according to the ICO’s right of access page. Now, however, they will have to provide the data within one month of receiving the request. Under the Data Privacy Act, companies had 40 calendar days to respond once they received a request. The other detail that will change with personal data access under GDPR is how long companies have to respond to your request. Although, the ICO also notes that a firm may charge a “reasonable fee” when “a request is manifestly unfounded or excessive, particularly if it is repetitive.”Īccording to SAR guidelines from the ICO, an individual should have the personal data held on them described, be told whether their personal data is being processes, be told why it’s being processed, be told if that data is being sent anywhere else, and be given a copy the data and details of its sourcing. Under GDPR, however, that fee is being removed for standard requests. There are two key differences between SAR requests made under the Data Privacy Act and those made under GDPR: The cost and time frame.īefore GDPR, the maximum fee that could be charged for access to your data was £10, or about $14. There is no particular format required, as long as the request is made in writing. For starters, a person will need to file a subject access request (SAR) that, as noted by the Guardian, is simply “an email, fax or letter asking for their personal data.” SEE: GDPR consent request forms: Sample text (Tech Pro Research)įor clear guidelines on submitting an SAR, see the Subject access code of practice from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). The process for data access under GDPR will be mostly the same as it was under the Data Protection Act of 1998, but with a few slight differences. However, it also contains the right to access any information that may be held by a company, including your employer. Many people know the GDPR for its hard-line regulation around the “right to be forgotten,” where an individual can request a company to erase the personal data it holds on them. The May 25 deadline for the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is fast-approaching, and the coming changes will greatly shift the ability of companies to interact with customer data.

Here’s why: He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined-and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier-and secretly, its most unwilling. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.īut when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. Goodreads | Amazon | Book Depository | My Goodreads review That's more than I can ask for in a book. Not sure what this means? Learn more about my rating system here. Overall, great stuff! I have my little gripes, but I had fun along the way, and Sabaa Tahir always leaves me reflecting on myself and my relationship to the world after finishing her books. I felt there was a great job of character development through the smaller actions described, and Sabaa Tahir did a great job of making me love, hate, and feel invested in her characters. I truly felt invested in the main characters by the end and felt conflicted with what was going through their minds. The book truly hit its stride in the second half, where all of the dominoes that were set up start to fall over, revelations are made, friendships are tested, and we're left with more questions than we started with. I feel like Sabaa Tahir was hinting at a reveal of an entire new dimension to this world, but hopefully that gets more fleshed out in the next books. Speaking of which, the supernatural aspect of this story is what truly has me interested. Also, the lore of the Scholars once being in power but now being the oppressed is interesting, while also having other, more supernatural forces at play. I thought the masks were an interesting aspect of one's loyalty being visible by all, based on if it's fused to the face or not. Also, maybe I'm dumb, but some of the smaller plot points got lost on me, mostly the smaller intricacies of Laia's dealings with the Resistance.īut for all of my complaints, there were a lot of parts I liked. But the Scholars being people who loved knowledge, and Marshals being people who rule with an iron fist, and don't forget the resistance fighters, known as the. Also, a small gripe, I felt like the names of the factions in An Ember in the Ashes were a little uninspired, although that's not the biggest deal. While I get why the bad situation and social hierarchy trope is a thing and is appealing to the primary audience-young adults-it feels a little overdone in the wake of Harry Potter (Dursleys/Hogwarts houses), Percy Jackson (single parent struggle/Camp Half Blood), and Hunger Games (District 12 squalor/the districts). Things start off in a standard way for your typical YA dystopian-esque novel, where adolescents are depicted in bad conditions, to say the least, and you learn about how the world is divided into factions/groups/districts. I came in expecting a story just as thought provoking, poignant, and eloquent as All My Rage, and while An Ember in the Ashes didn't quite reach the peaks of Sabaa Tahir's latest novel, its action-packed storyline and colorful cast of characters had me turning the metaphorical pages of my audiobook in the back half of the book. After reading All My Rage, I knew I had to give Sabaa Tahir's other books a read. 5/19/2023 0 Comments Flocks of blackbirds“I was watching the ones that were still on the ground and hoping they would get up and fly,” Edwards said. The bird-loving scientists hope the survivors make it to where they were headed without further incident. (There’s also the fact that toxic fumes would have affected other wildlife in the area.) As for 5G interference, Edwards and Termignoni Garcia shook their heads. If they had inhaled poisonous gases or been shocked, the physics of their movement would have been entirely different. First, it’s clear in the video that they weren’t disoriented but were flying extremely fast. The researchers were skeptical of the many internet theories about the birds of Cuauhtémoc. “These phenomena are caused by the constant process of urbanization and they will be more frequent as our cities grow,” said Termignoni Garcia. Last year, hundreds of songbirds crashed into skyscrapers in New York. Migratory birds are known to make fatal mistakes, often involving reflective glass. By the time they realized they were wrong, there was no turning back. From above, these roofs reflect light the same way a body of water does, so the birds might have been looking for a quick drink. Termignoni Garcia focused on the laminated roofs of the houses. The point is, most of the birds would follow rather than be aware of where they actually were in 3D space.” Maybe some sort of stochastic event caused the leader of the flock to dodge something - maybe it was dodging the wires or maybe it just made a mistake. In winter, search through mixed-species blackbird flocks and be careful not to overlook the streaky, brown females, which can sometimes resemble a sparrow. “If that’s the case, then most of the birds in the flock wouldn’t know they’re close to the ground. Where there’s standing water and vegetation, Red-winged Blackbirds are likely to be one of the most common birds you see and hear. “Maybe the leader of the flock somehow didn’t know they were close to the ground,” Edwards said. and Canada but winter in Mexico, have ben known to travel in groups of 3,000, so it’s easy to see how one mistake could lead many to their doom. One bird sets the pace and direction, the others just go along with what everyone else is doing. They say that when migratory birds fly in large flocks, they follow the leader. Edwards, Alexander Agassiz Professor of Organismal and Evolutionary Biology, and Flavia Termignoni Garcia, a postdoctoral researcher from his lab who studies bird behavior, believe the truth lies in flock dynamics. These birds often fly together in large groups, creating a striking visual spectacle. Breaking with tradition- you want to choose the older protocol version 1.0 NOT 1.1. Immediately below that, notice that there is a pulldown menu for OSC to choose between two versions of the protocol. In the network tab, scroll down to Interface Protocols and make sure that UDP Strings & OSC is turned on. First, a recap on how to link EOS and Lightwright.īoot up your console, or open EOS Nomad and go into the shell by clicking Settings. Do you have any favorites? Comment below how you use these tools to help your process.A favorite function of mine that Lightwright 6 added is the ability to reconcile patch with EOS through OSC. In the future, we will go over more EOS OSC LW functions. Obviously, with the current bug, making groups like these has a few more steps than ideal, but I think the trade for efficiency and accuracy with non-sequential lists of channels more than makes up for it. Here you can sync by choosing Group List>Send Groups to Console. Make 900 thru 904 by typing 900 904 Enter.īack in Lightwright, open the Group List window again (Utilities>Group List) and notice that you have a new pull down menu item- Group List. So let’s go to EOS and go to Group Blind (double tap the Group button) and create an empty set of groups. There is an obstacle (a bug?) to this “just working” between LW and EOS that prevents LW from making a new group, but it still can edit one. In the dialogue box, enter 900 for the group number and label it FOH (or whatever number and label you prefer). Keyboard shortcut for Mac users is Command, Shift G. Go to Utilities>Create Console Group from Selected Worksheet Rows. This is a big show for me, so it will run well out of what my screen shot will display. In Lightwright, select all of your FOH fixtures by clicking on the first item, holding shift and clicking on the last item. I like group 900 to be all front of house fixtures for when the main comes in, and then groups 901-904 to be all lighting in wings 1-4. There are five groups I always have in my shows, and they are a treat to do in Lightwright. Now that everything is speaking (assuming Windows Firewall isn’t being “helpful” and preventing it), let’s make some groups. Depending on the show file size, it may take a full minute or two for the first sync to be complete. Click the box at top for Use Console Link and I would suggest clicking the box for Get All Cues Now if you have any in the board. If you are on a PC, and are using both Lightwright and EOS on the same computer, you will need to enter 127.0.0.1 instead of the console IP. In the dialogue box that opens, input the IP Address of your console (found by pressing About in EOS and reading the info on the left under IP). Now click the Light bulb shaped icon in the upper right hand corner. In Lightwright, go to Setup>Dimming&Control and under Console type, select the only choice: ETC EOS Family. I have the ports numbered (80) for use with TouchOSC, but they are not relevant to Lighwright. In EOS, go to Setup>System Settings>Show Control. Start up Lightwright if it’s not already and make sure both are in the same show file. It will save you hours of misery in the future.Ĭlick Accept and exit the Shell. (Check out my earlier blog post that covers exporting data from Lightwright and importing it into EOS.) Today, we will get the two applications linked and then build some groups that would be very annoying to build without OSC.īoot up your console, or open EOS Nomad and go into the shell by clicking Settings. In this case, ETC opened up all functions of EOS to OSC control, and Lightwright developed functions to import all your show data and then name cues, create scenes, push all the short labels from Lightwright into the patch of EOS, create and manage groups, as well as the better-known ability to turn on lights for focus or patch check. OSC (Open Sound Control) is a protocol for communication between computers. The latest versions of Lightwright have addressed the needs of Programmers and Designers in really compelling ways through the use of OSC. The functions of load and patch error checking alone make it worth the purchase on a large show. I’m a big fan of Lightwright, probably since a great deal of my early career included being a Production Electrician. 5/19/2023 0 Comments Captain america 4Notably, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier ended with Sam taking Eli and Isaiah to the Captain America museum, where Sam shows them the tribute to Isaiah, which finally acknowledged Isaiah's pivotal role in super soldier history - a legacy that Eli/Patriot can dissect/carry in Captain America: New World Order. This is even more likely since Eli's grandfather, Isaiah Bradley, is confirmed to be in the Captain America 4 cast. Depending on how quickly the MCU continues to build its Young Avengers roster, Eli's appearance in Captain America: New World Order could conceivably feature other members of the team too. Captain America 4 could be where Eli begins using Mutant Growth Hormone pills to become Patriot and run around in a red, white, and blue costume like Captain America. The future Young Avenger debuted in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier - but didn't get his powers by then. There is also the chance that Captain America: New World Order features the return of Eli Bradley (Elijah Richardson). There are plenty of characters who could still appear in the Captain America: New World Order cast though, and below is a list of the most likely. The cast list so far indicates that Captain America: New World Order will continue from where The Falcon and the Winter Soldier left off, tackling the sociopolitical climate in a multiverse where superpowered individuals exist, potentially with Harrison Ford himself becoming the long-awaited Red Hulk. Others have pointed out she could just as likely be a foil for the new Captain America. Shira Haas' Captain America 4 character first appeared in 1980's Incredible Hulk #256, and she's seen been speculated by some to be a possible Black Widow facsimile, filling for Sam Wilson the role Natasha Romanoff did for Steve Rogers. The only completely new character in the cast is the mutant spy Ruth Bat-Seraph/Sabra (Shira Haas), the Israeli version of Steve Rogers/Captain America. Other returning MCU characters include Joaquin Torres/new Falcon (Danny Ramirez) and former super soldier Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly), both of whom appeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Finally paying off the setup of Marvel Comics antagonist The Leader after nearly two decades (by Captain America 4's 2024 release) has many fans especially excited about this New World Order casting. While Tim Blake Nelson is technically an existing MCU cast member, 2008 was over a decade ago, and The Incredible Hulk's status in the MCU canon has been debatable. Another interesting addition to the cast is Tim Blake Nelson's Samuel Sterns, who took the first steps to becoming the Leader in 2008's The Incredible Hulk but hasn't appeared in any other Marvel project since. These might even include the MCU debut of Red Hulk in Captain America 4. Casting a legend of cinema like Harrison Ford, best known as Indiana Jones and Han Solo, indicates Marvel has big plans for the character. Ford will be taking over from the late William Hurt in the role of General "Thunderbolt" Ross. Have something to add to the story? In Endgame, he fought with other Avengers against the Mad Titan and his forces. Sam was among the unfortunate who were obliterated after Thanos’ snap. After the events of the film, he became a fugitive and joined the war against Thanos. In Captain America: Civil War, he once again teamed up with Steve Rogers against the conflict with Iron Man and his allies. He teamed up with Captain America to take down Hydra that had not only survived but also infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. Mackie, who first played the role of Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is a veteran who ran a self-help group for soldiers’ suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. John Walker briefly became Captain America but he was removed from the role after he murdered one of the Flag-Smashers in cold blood. He and Wilson had teamed up to take on the anarchist group Flag-Smashers in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Captain America 4 joins several other MCU projects focused on a returning, or legacy character. He had also handed his shield over to Sam, to declare him as his replacement in the forthcoming films.īut it is not clear whether Captain America 4 will also feature Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes or Winter Soldier. The original Captain America, Steve Rogers, had retired from the role after 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. The actor’s Sam Wilson received the Captain’s mantle and shield in the final episode of Disney Plus TV series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Anthony Mackie has closed the deal to star as the new Captain America in the fourth film of the Marvel Studios series of films, Deadline reported. |
